Becoming a member

Membership entitles anyone who lives, works, or studies in The Highland Council area to use any library in the Highland Libraries network. Members can borrow books and other items, use the request service, use library computers and access hundreds of digital resources free of charge.

Register online

To join the library service and start borrowing items please click on the button below after you have read and accepted the membership conditions. This will give you temporary membership to allow immediate access to some of our online resources. You will need to visit your local library within 21 days to make your membership permanent. Please take your temporary borrower number with you.   

Conditions of membership

• To borrow items, you must present your library membership card.
• Items may be borrowed for up to three weeks.
• You may borrow up to 20 items on your card.
• Items may be borrowed from and returned to any High Life Highland Library branch.
• Items may be renewed six at any branch or online via ‘My account’.
• Staff are happy to renew items over the telephone during opening hours, please have your library card number on hand. If a reservation has been placed on an item, you have on loan a renewal is not permitted.
• Overdue E-mail notices are sent as a courtesy reminder for your convenience.
• A reservation and/or inter-library loan service is available for those items which are on loan, available at another branch or at another library service. You can place your own reservations for most items through the library Service online catalogue.
• All costs incurred by the Library due to items lost or damaged whilst in your care must be reimbursed.
• All inter-library loan and lost membership card charges are non-refundable.
• If you change your address or name, please notify the library.
• Membership details are confidential and will not be disclosed to other parties.
