Political untouchables : the Tories and the '45

Cruickshanks, Eveline1979
Books, Manuscripts
This book explains why the Tories under George I and George II became 'political untouchables', denied office at Westminster and any advancement under the Crown and Government. What took place in 1714-15 was not a change from a Whig ministry, it was a whole social revolution which has hitherto escaped the attention of historians. Precluded from being constitutional opposition, the Tory party became mainly Jacobite and looked to a restoration of the Stuarts as the only means ending of an unjust proscription.
