Nelson, Anne, 1954-2017
Books, Manuscripts
Born into affluence, married to a playwright, Suzanne Spaak was an intimate and muse of Magritte and a close friend of Colette. A member of Parisian high society, she could have spent the Second World War living in relative comfort. But instead she became a leading player in the Paris underground, working with spies such as Léon Chertok and Leopold Trepper in her efforts to save the city's most vulnerable people: Jewish children. Moving from the darkly glamorous culture of occupied Paris to the dilapidated streets of the Jewish arrondisements, 'Code Name Suzette' recreates the life of an inspirational woman who transcended boundaries of nationality and class, and worked tirelessly to protect Paris' most vulnerable and oppressed.
