Following the great American writer (and fellow half-miler) Joseph Campbell’s recommendation to Follow your bliss a 21 year old Scot takes Campbell’s advice by trying to win a gold medal against some of the best athletes in the world at the 1978 Commonwealth Games in an event he’s hardly run before. Audacity and Idiocy is a record of Hoffmann’s journey as recorded in his journals at the time capturing the social and cultural era of the 1970s. He of course fails. This is no Hollywood film with a happy ending. But with the audacity and chutzpah of youth, on another day if the planets had so aligned, he wasn’t so very far away from pulling off that unlikely success. Instead, his audacity met its match in the intemperance and idiocy of youth. Hoffmann enjoys paradoxes and from the view in winter has now come to see the journey as a successful failure.
