Abstract: This thesis investigates the survival and nineteenth-century expansion of the major Scottish publishing firms, Blackie and Son, and Thomas Nelson and Sons. These firms developed similarly - initially the output of both was almost exclusively religious in content, and both, although to differing degrees, remained in that market for much of the century, while at the same time building strong juvenile fiction and educational lists.
